I saw a meme on Facebook that reminds me a lot of clients who are dealing with aspects of being alone, and that is taking a risk and trying new things.
The meme was of a baby crawling and trying to walk. The story of the meme is that the baby tries to get up to stand and falls more than 50 times. The baby never says “this isn’t for me” instead the baby keeps trying to walk no matter how long, difficult and painful it is. Eventually, the baby walks!
This is such a necessary skill for so many of my clients learning to live a full, rich life and to combat loneliness. They need to take many risks to try new things and put themselves in new and often uncomfortable situations in order to learn and grow. They will have negative experiences and may be a few failures. But if they stick with it, they will be rewarded with a positive experience, a new life interest and possibly new friends in the making. Growing is challenging and often painful.
How about you? How often are you taking calculated risks? Do you put yourself out there to try new things? Is there a jewelry making class you’ve been wanting to try but afraid to go alone? What about joining ago gym? Do you want to go but find it too intimidating to go into the gym? Do you love trying new foods and restaurants but the fear of joining Meetup group or go to a restaurant by yourself is just too overwhelming?
Well, adopt the attitude of the baby! In fact, the reason I love this meme so much is that everyone, including you! Has been that baby! You’ve failed and failed and failed and kept on trying! In fact, if I’m not mistaken, you are probably pretty good at walking!
So, you have done it! You have it in you! Now you just need to channel your inner child, the one that was brave and fearless and didn’t get stuck with failed attempts. Afterall, a failed attempt is just feedback to modify and try something different.
